What is a safe dissolved oxygen level for a fishery?
For most UK coarse and game fish, a safe dissolved oxygen level is above about 6 mg/L. Fish come under stress below roughly 4 mg/L and are at serious risk of death below about 3 mg/L. Warmer water and larger fish reduce the safe margin further.
“How much oxygen does my lake need?” is one of the most common questions we’re asked — and the honest answer is it depends on your fish, your water temperature and the time of day. But there are clear, useful thresholds to work from.
The quick answer
Dissolved oxygen is measured in milligrams per litre (mg/L). As a general guide:

Does it vary by species?
Yes, significantly. As a rule:
- Salmonids (trout, grayling) are the most demanding — aim to keep them well above 6 mg/L.
- Cyprinids (carp, bream, roach, tench) tolerate more, but large carp in warm water are more vulnerable than their reputation suggests.
- Fry and stressed or recently handled fish need more headroom than healthy adults.
Why temperature changes everything
Two things happen as water warms:
- Capacity drops. Cold water can hold far more oxygen than warm water. At 25°C, fully saturated water holds noticeably less oxygen than at 10°C.
- Demand rises. Fish metabolism speeds up in warm water, so they need more oxygen exactly when there’s less available.
That’s why the same 5 mg/L reading is reassuring in April and worrying in July. In summer, set your alert thresholds higher.
What should I actually do?
- Set thresholds for your stock. If you hold trout, alert earlier than a carp water would.
- Watch the trend, not just the number. A steady fall through the evening is a warning even if the current reading looks acceptable — see why fish die overnight.
