How to prevent a fish kill in hot weather

To prevent a fish kill in hot weather, keep dissolved oxygen above about 5 mg/L: monitor oxygen continuously, run aeration overnight and in still conditions, avoid feeding heavily in heatwaves, and act on the pre-dawn low when oxygen bottoms out. Heatwaves are when fisheries lose fish. The water looks calm and inviting by day, then a hot, still night quietly drains the oxygen and you arrive to find fish gasping — or gone. Why hot weather is dangerous

Three things stack up when the weather turns warm:

  • Everything breathes faster. Fish, bacteria and algae all consume oxygen more quickly in warm water, draining that smaller reserve sooner.
  • Still, cloudy nights reduce both mixing and the daytime photosynthesis that would otherwise top the oxygen back up.

A hot-weather action plan

1. Monitor oxygen continuously. Spot checks with a handheld meter at midday tell you almost nothing about the overnight low — the very moment that matters. Continuous monitoring at the deep, sheltered spot shows the pattern building so you can act before it becomes a crisis.

2. Get alerted overnight. The warning has to reach your phone while there’s still time to run an aerator or move fish — not at your next visit. Overnight, threshold-based alerts turn a slow-motion disaster into a manageable one.

4. Ease off the feed. Heavy feeding in a heatwave adds to the biological load and the oxygen demand. Cut back when temperatures spike and fish go off the feed anyway.

5. Manage weed and algae before they crash. A big bloom produces oxygen by day but consumes it hard at night — and if it dies back suddenly, decomposition can pull oxygen down fast. Keep on top of it rather than letting it build.

6. Watch the forecast. Long, warm, settled spells with overcast nights are the classic setup. Treat a run of hot, still nights as a red alert and check your safeguards before it arrives.
