Monitoring an off-grid carp lake, from the UK to France
You can monitor a remote carp lake with no mains power or Wi-Fi using a solar-powered sensor station and a gateway that connects over a 4G/LTE mobile signal. The station reads dissolved oxygen day and night, sends it to a portal and app, and alerts you — or your bailiff on site — before oxygen crashes. It works the same on a UK syndicate water or a French carp lake.
Big carp are valuable, long-lived and — because of their size — among the first fish to suffer when oxygen drops. They’re also often kept on exactly the waters that are hardest to watch: quiet syndicate lakes, estate waters, and remote French carp venues with no power, no Wi-Fi and nobody on site overnight. Here’s how to protect them anyway.
Why remote carp lakes are high-risk
The very things that make a carp water special also make it vulnerable:
- No one there at night. Oxygen bottoms out before dawn (see why fish die overnight in lakes), and on a quiet syndicate or holiday venue there’s rarely anyone at the bank to notice.
- Rich, weedy, well-stocked water. The features carp anglers love — weed, silt, a good head of big fish — all increase overnight oxygen demand.
- Heat. A French summer, or a UK heatwave, pushes water temperatures up, and warmer water holds less oxygen while burning through it faster.
- Big fish first. Because large carp have a high oxygen demand, they’re the ones you lose first — the exact fish the lake is built around.
The off-grid problem — and the fix
Traditional monitoring assumes power and internet at the water. Remote carp lakes have neither. The fix is to need nothing at the water at all:
- The sensor station is solar powered. It sits on the lake, reads the deep water, and runs year-round on sunlight with a battery buffer. Nothing to plug in.
- The gateway uses whatever signal the site has. Plug it into Ethernet at a lodge, join it to Wi-Fi, or — for a truly remote water — let it use a 4G/LTE mobile signal. It can even run from its own solar panel.
- Readings go to a portal and app. You see live oxygen and trends, and get alerts, wherever you are — at home in the UK while your French lake looks after itself, or on the bank.

Getting alerts to the right person

A simple setup for a remote carp water
- Place one station in the canary spot — the deepest, most sheltered area where oxygen falls first. One well-placed station protects the whole lake.
- Site the gateway where there’s a signal — a lodge, cabin or high point with mobile coverage.
- Set your alert threshold to suit your stock (around 4–5 mg/L is a sensible early warning for big carp).
- Link an aerator via a smart plug for automatic response.
- Add your team so alerts reach whoever is closest.
