Where to place your lake monitoring kit

Place the sensor station in the deepest, most sheltered part of the lake where oxygen falls first — but keep it in open water with clear sky above, not under trees, so the solar panel charges. Site the gateway high and dry where it has a mains, Wi-Fi or mobile signal, and put any aerator near the station so you can see it working. Good placement matters more than the number of units.

Where you put your kit matters more than how much of it you buy. A single, well-placed sensor station protects a whole lake; a poorly placed one can miss the very crash it’s there to catch, or run flat because it never sees the sun. Here’s how to get all three parts — station, gateway and aerator — in the right spots.

The sensor station: the “canary spot”, with sky above

Your goal is to read the water where oxygen falls first, so the station warns you before the rest of the lake is in trouble. That means:

  • The deepest area. Cool, deep water holds the least oxygen and is cut off from the surface when the lake stratifies — see how water temperature affects dissolved oxygen.
  • The most sheltered corner, out of the prevailing wind, where there’s least natural mixing.
  • The weediest, siltiest zone, which swings hardest overnight as plants and decay consume oxygen.
  • Away from aerators and inflows, so you see the lake’s true condition — not the oxygenated bubble around a fountain.

One station in that canary spot beats three in easy-to-reach places.

Balancing it against the sun

Here’s the tension: the sheltered, weedy corner is often the shadiest too — and the station is solar powered. It needs enough daylight on its panel to stay charged, especially through a UK or northern-European winter.

So aim for the best of both:

  • Keep it in open water with clear sky overhead. A spot that’s sheltered from wind but not shaded by trees is ideal.
  • Avoid overhanging branches and the shadow line of tall trees, buildings or high banks — particularly to the south, where the low winter sun sits.
  • A little compromise on the “perfect” oxygen spot is fine if it keeps the panel charged; a station that’s run flat protects nothing. On heavily shaded lakes we can also lengthen the sampling interval to stretch the battery (more in how it works), or fit a larger panel.

The gateway: high, dry and in signal

The gateway is the bit that gets your readings to the internet, so it needs a connection — but not at the water:

  • Somewhere with a signal: plug into Ethernet or join Wi-Fi at a clubhouse, lodge or cabin, or use a 4G/LTE mobile signal for a remote water.
  • High and dry. Mount it off the ground, out of flood reach, ideally with a clear line toward the lake for the best wireless link to the station.
  • Powered, or solar. A mains socket is simplest; for off-grid sites the gateway can run from its own solar panel — face that panel at the open southern sky, clear of shade.
  • Within range. The wireless link comfortably covers a lake and its surroundings, but thick woodland or big buildings between station and gateway can shorten it. We confirm a strong signal during setup.

The aerator and smart plug

If you’re using automatic aeration:

  • Site the aerator near the monitored spot (but not right on top of the sensor), so the readings actually reflect what the aerator is doing to the water you care about.
  • Keep the smart plug dry and in range of the gateway.
  • Then set a threshold and let it run automatically when oxygen dips — see do I need an aerator for my lake.

A quick placement checklist

  1. Station in the deep, sheltered, weedy zone — the canary spot.
  2. …but in open water with unshaded sky for the solar panel.
  3. Gateway high, dry and in signal, panel facing open sky if solar.
  4. Aerator near the monitored spot, smart plug dry and in range.
